Vienna Vintner wine tour 2012

Wine lovers in Vienna have the opportunity this coming weekend to take part in a wine tour the ‘Wiener Winzertour’ (Vienna Vintner) where local wine producers will be displaying their locally produced wine specialties for the fourth consecutive year.

Wine buffs can tour the Vienna wine region and treat the palette to the very best of Vienna’s wines including this year’s highlight - the Wiener Gemischte Satz.

Wiener Gemischte Satz is a typical Viennese speciality which stretches back to the 19th century, but over the last few years has been making a revival. The wine is made from a variety of grapes with sometimes up to twenty different grapes taken from the same vineyard, and used for the Gemischte Satz wine production.

Vienna is the only capital in the world that has vineyards within the city boundaries and from 20th-21st April 2012 between 15.00 and 20.00 wine lovers can follow trails in Vienna’s 19th and 21st districts to different wine taverns, vineyards and restaurants and where the local wine producers will be offering wine tasting and presenting their wines - telling guests all about their wine specialities and giving tips on wine drinking.

As well as top wines there will be the chance to taste food specialities at the various ‘Heuriger’ – traditional Viennese wine taverns.

Robert Fitzthum from the Vienna Agricultural Chamber said: "The Wine Tour is a highlight of the Vienna wine year and really is a very important event for us.  The wine producers open their doors for us and we get to have a good look behind the scenes and learn more about their wine as well as enjoy new tastes."

Local wine grower Herbert Schilling said: "The quality of Viennese wines and the wine culture has grown and improved significantly over the past few years. We, the wine growers, are very proud of that achievement and want to show the public what we can do.
For just 5 Euros per guest per wine producer visitors can enjoy a range of wines, together with the vintner. Guests can also purchase wine to take home and enjoy.
