Unanimous praise for 'Gespenster'

A new German version of one of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s most popular plays has convinced critics and audiences.

"Gespenster", which is based on Ibsen’s "Gengangere" (Ghosts) is currently on at the Akademietheater Vienna. The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised the performances of  Kirsten Dene and Martin Schwab. The German newspaper described the stage stars as "one of the most desperate and amusing couples" to be seen on stages in German-speaking Europe. Austrian magazine profil praised director David Bösch’s "subtle and precise" production while the Süddeutsche Zeitung lauded "Gespenster" as a "great achievement".

Joachim Meyerhoff’s performance in a leading role in Arthur Schnitzler’s "Professor Bernhardi" at the Burgtheater in Vienna has received wide acclaim as well. The Kleine Zeitung described his performance as "fantastic" and highlighted the play’s witty series of dialogues between Meyerhoff and Nicholas Ofczarek.

Ofczarek also stars in "Endstation Sehnsucht". The play directed by Dieter Giesing is based on "A Streetcar Named Desire" by Tennessee Williams. The "Jedermann" star forms a triumvirate of acting excellence with Katharina Lorenz and Dörte Lyssewski in the new Burgtheater production.

Other essential parts of the programmes of the Burgtheater / Akademietheater association are "Einfach kompliziert" starring Gert Voss and Simon Stephens’ "Wastwater". "Romeo und Julia" (Romeo and Juliet) star Daniel Sträßer, Elisabeth Orth and Mavie Hörbiger can be seen in leading roles in the new play directed by Stephan Kimmig.

Thomas Bernhard’s "Einfach kompliziert" is a wonderful play which enables Voss to prove his extraordinary capacities. Voss – widely seen as one of the most gifted theatre stars in Central Europe – plays a lonesome actor reminiscing about long-gone showbiz successes. The regular visits of a young girl delivering milk have become the bright moments of his dull and frustrating daily life.

Woody Allen’s "Eine Mittsommernachts-Sex-Komödie" (A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy) starring Burgtheater star Michael Maertens and renowned film actor Roland Koch and Rene Pollesch’s "Die Liebe zum Nochniedagewesenen" will also be on in the coming weeks. Visit www.burgtheater.at for the detailed schedule of the Burgtheater and the Akademietheater. To book tickets, call +43 1 514 444 145.

Lovers of cultural delights who prefer original version cinema highlights are well-advised to study the Burgkino’s playbill. The cinema, which is located in walking distance from the Burgtheater and the Akademietheater at Opernring 19, will screen French drama film "Les Neiges du Kilimandjaro", Phyllida Lloyd’s "The Iron Lady" and black and white hit "The Third Man" starring Orson Welles tomorrow (Thurs). Meryl Streep ("Out of Africa", "The Hours", "The Devil Wears Prada") received an Academy Award – the global film industry’s most important accolade – for her performance as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady".
