A stage situated in the heart of Vienna is currently drawing the crowds with a new production based on an award-winning play by late British playwright Anthony Shaffer.
"Sleuth" portrays the encounter of a bestselling author and a struggling actor. Shaffer, who died in 2001, finished his best known work in 1970. It was turned into a mystery film starring Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine in 1972. Kenneth Branagh directed another cinema production based on Shaffer’s acclaimed play in 2007.
Now Carolin Pienkos created a German-language adaption of the Broadway production. Her husband Cornelius Obonya ("Cordoba – Das Rückspiel") and Rupert Henning ("Freundschaft") star in "Revanche" which premiered at the Stadttheater Walfischgasse last month.
"Every sentence of Shaffer’s play sparkles and shimmers," Henning said about "Sleuth". He told the Kurier he was considering continuing his stage cooperation with Obonya beyond the coming weeks in which "Revanche" can be seen at the Stadttheater Walfischgasse.
"Pienkos’ production is an artful clash of love rivals packed with witty dialogues," Viennese newspaper Die Presse attested in its review of the "gripping" play while Salzburger Nachrichten critics praised "Revanche" as a "brilliant, funny piece of acting excellence".
Legendary actors like Gusti Wolf, Cissy Kraner, Waltraut Haas and Gunther Philipp performed at the Stadttheater Walfischgasse – which has undergone an extensive renovation and modernisation since 2004 – over the decades.
"Ärztlich Willkommen!", a new comedy starring Roman Felix and popular voice imitator Alex Kristan, and Joesi Prokopetz’s latest stage production "Übrigens! Aber das nur nebenbei" are currently also on at the theatre which is situated in walking distance from sights such as St. Stephen’s Cathedral and the Donaukanal (Danube Canal), one of Vienna’s most popular running and cycling stretches.
Actor Oliver Baier, TV comedian Rudi Roubinek and newspaper columnist Guido Tartarotti can also be seen on stage at the Stadttheater Walfischgasse in the coming weeks. Baier examines Schlager songs’s lyrics in "Schlager Schlachtung" and eventually "slaughters" them as his programme’s title suggests to reveal their bizarreness.
Roubinek plays the servant of fictional Austrian-Hungarian Emperor Robert Heinrich I. in television hit "Wir sind Kaiser". His new stage production "Wir bleiben Kaiser" has been well acclaimed. The same can be said about Tartarotti’s third spoken word programme, "Heini Hemmi".
