Vienna to get new electric power buses

From Autumn Wiener Linien is to start introducing electric buses into the city’s public transport network to replace petrol powered buses.

Just like the trams, the buses will be connected to current collectors to charge the batteries quickly.

"The overhead cables have the advantage that charging is quick, automatic and can be done without having to plug anything in," said Dominik Gries, spokesperson for Wiener Linien.
Drivers will not have to get out of the vehicle at final stops like Schottenring and Schwarzenbergplatz, they will be able to attach the power through the touch of a button.

The new buses will be fully charged within 15 minutes. Overnight the buses will also be able to fully charge for the day ahead.

The buses will in addition be fitted with a system which will reduce speed through saving braking energy and reduce the power needed by around 20 per cent.

The buses are being built by Italian company Rampini and will each have 40 seats – currently there are 27 seats.

In Autumn 12 electric buses will be put into action. It will then be expanded if successful.
