Upper Austria acts to promote local higher education

Upper Austria just started the campaign 'Campusland Oberösterreich' in order to promote its universities with a budget of 300,000 Euros.

The aim of the initiative is to motivate home grown students to stay on their local campus, but also to attract foreign students as well.

Although the offerings of the universities in Upper Austria are quite broad, each year around 60 percent of the students decide to move to another state to study.

Most of them stay there after they have graduated, which results in a lack of university graduates among the population of Upper Austria.

A network of universities like the Johannes Kepler University, the University of Arts in Linz, the Catholic-Theological Private University Linz, the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences, the University of Teacher Education, and the Anton Bruckner Private University have been affiliated under the name "Campusland Oberösterreich".

They are keen to work together to promote Upper Austria's educational offerings on a national and international level.

This will be achieved by pointing out their success in research, and they also want to set themselves apart from the mass production universities by stressing how they offer a balanced relationship between teachers and students.

Another factor that stands out for local education boss Doris Hummer (ÖVP) is the strong economy. According to Mrs Hummer, graduates will not have problems finding a job.

She also said that she wants to present Upper Austria as an area that offers a high living standard, plenty of leisure time activities and culture for less living costs in comparison to other cities in Austria, like Vienna.
