Major traffic accident closes Westautobahn for seven hours

The A1 Westautobahn was closed for seven hours shortly before midnight last night (Monday) after a serious accident between Pöchlarn and Melk in the direction of Vienna.

A truck smashed into the back of a furniture transporter which was parked on the hard shoulder, leaving two people injured.

Furniture was thrown from the trailer of the transporter across all three lanes of the motorway when it was hit. The driver of the furniture transporter had allegedly stopped to help another driver stuck on the hard shoulder.

The cabin of the lorry driver was crushed, trapping the 52-year-old driver.

Rescuer Stefan Spielbichler said: "The man had to be freed with hydraulic cutting equipment. He was taken in a serious condition to hospital after initial first aid treatment."

The driver of the furniture transporter was also injured and taken to hospital for a check up but is not thought to be in a serious condition.

The motorway was closed until 07.30 this morning (Tuesday)while the scene was cleared.

Meanwhile an elderly driver was killed on Monday evening on the S6 Semmering-Schnellstraße.

The 82-year-old man from Eisenstadt lost control of his road, came off the road and crashed into a signpost.

The man died at the scene. His 76-year-old wife who was a passenger in the car was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
