Two fires in Ottakring claim one life

Two fires started on Thursday evening in the Vienna district of Ottakring, one of which claimed a man’s life. Several people were evacuated as a result of the two blazes.

The first fire was reported to the fire department in Ottakring at 21.00 in an apartment on Neulerchenfelder Straße. One of the apartment’s tenants was killed, according to emergency officials in Vienna.

The apartment was full of inflammable materials, and hard to extinguish. According to police investigators, foul play was not suspected regardless of the amounts of dangerous materials in the apartment.

Later, at 22:30, a roof fire on Wichtelgasse required the attention of the fire department. Thick smoke rose from the building when they arrived, and residents of the house were brought to safety.

Several emergency vehicles and four fire-fighting pipelines were required to extinguish the fire. The mixed design of the house – brick, metal and wood – made the process difficult.

The fire fighting work continued until Friday morning.
