Slovenia's bid to get a type of sausage named after the region of Kranjska granted protected geographical status under EU law is being opposed by Austria, where the popular sausage is known after its German name Käsekrainer.
Known as the kranjska klobasa in Slovenian, officials claim it was invented in North Slovenia in the Krain region.
The Austrian Chamber of Commerce has reacted angrily to the application by Slovenia – saying that the loss of the Käsekrainer will be a loss for the gastronomy seen in Austria and for the country's cultural heritage.
The EU commission has put forward an application to the patenting office on behalf of Slovenia to claim exclusive rights to the cheese filled sausage.
If it is approved then it means that the sausage stands around Austria will no longer be able to order or sell the product.
In a statement by the Austrian Chamber of Commerce however they say that renaming the sausage so that it can continue to be sold would be almost impossible and they claim that in any case it was invented in Austria in the 1980s.
The statement added: "The sausage stands of Vienna are a classic trademark of the city and the Käsekrainer is a vital ingredient of the selection that they offer. It would be like simply removing Wiener Schnitzel off the menu of Viennese restaurants. Even if you called it something else what would be the point?"
They added that removing it from the offering of the sausage stands would be an enormous financial cost, and that there are enough real problems for the small business owners to deal with without this added problem.
The Austrian agriculture ministries also backed the Chamber of Commerce in opposing the application.
If the two countries do not manage to sort out a solution then the EU will rule on the subject some time next year.
